Royal Perth Hospital is the leading teaching hospital and the major trauma centre for Western Australia. We treat approximately 70% of the state's major trauma cases providing expert emergency and critical care. RPH is the home of the State Trauma Unit, State Burns Unit and State Spinal Unit.

Our hospital covers a vast range of healthcare and is a leader in many areas - trauma, burns, bone marrow transplant, home cancer care, spinal rehabilitation and nursing research to name a few.

In the Critical Care Division we are able to offer our nurses exceptional career opportunities in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit /Cardiology Ward and High Dependency Area.

Our hospital is a leader in many areas including being the designated trauma service provider in Western Australia, state referral centre for burns, state centre for Heart and Lung Transplantation and Advanced Heart Failure, to name but a few.
  • Every area has Staff Development Nurses who offer a comprehensive orientation and continual support for ongoing professional development.
  • Educational opportunities are available with unit based in- service, structured study days, internal and external courses. University affiliated post graduate courses are also offered specialising in Critical Care (Intensive Care & High Dependency), Emergency, and Coronary Care.
  • Rotations within the Critical Care division to facilitate personal and professional development are also available.
We currently have Registered Nurse positions available in the following areas of the Critical Care Division:

High Dependency Area


The Royal Perth Hospital High Dependency Area is a 8 bed unit which is staffed and equipped to provide a level of care intermediate between intensive care and general care on the wards.
The High Dependency area treats patients with single organ dysfunction/failure and those at high risk of developing complications. The pace and workload is fast and dynamic, making the work interesting and challenging.
Two years post registration experience in acute nursing is required before you can apply to this are.

Intensive Care Unit


The Intensive Care Unit consists of 22 beds, divided between a surgical and general unit. The ICU provides expert care for a variety of patients including: burns, cardiothoracic, vascular, heart and lung transplants, major trauma, sepsis, multi-organ dysfunction and surgical and medical emergency patients. Nursing staff are rotated through both areas and therefore gain broad and varied experience.
Two years post registration experience in acute nursing is required before you can apply to this are.

Emergency Department


The Emergency Department (ED) at Royal Perth Hospital has one of the greatest trauma workloads in the country, and is featured as one of the busiest departments in Australasia, with more than 58 000 presentations a year. The ED comprises of a variety of specialty areas including resuscitation, cardiac monitoring, triage, observation ward and a rapid assessment area.
Two years post registration experience in acute nursing is required before you can apply to this are.

Coronary Care Unit


The combined Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and Cardiology Ward (4F) provides a 32 bed centrally cardiac monitored area for patients with acute coronary events. This unit provides care for acute coronary syndrome, advanced heart failure and transplant patients and supports a busy interventional cardiology service.
Only 1 year post registration experience in acute nursing is required before you can apply to this are.
