Doctors and Medical Staff Registration in New Zealand
In New Zealand there are no registration categories (eg full registration, specialist registration). Instead, doctors are registered in a 'scope of practice'. Your scope of practice will depend on your qualifications, experience and the purpose and duration of your employment in New Zealand.
The Medical Council has broadly defined three scopes of practice:
- general
- vocational and
- special purpose scopes.
In addition there will be both a:
- provisional general scope, and a
- provisional vocational scope.
Doctors and Medical staff not trained in New Zealand or Australia need to be registered under a provisional general scope. To assess and confirm the competence of the doctor to practise within a general scope, a doctor will be registered within a provisional general scope for up to two years with the conditions outlined below.
The doctors must work:
- in a New Zealand hospital, general practice, educational institution or other organisation approved by the Council
- under supervision of a registered doctor approved by the Council, and
- for at least one year full time or equivalent.
The exact pathway you need to walk depends on your qualifications and experience. For more information, please consult the New Zealand Medical Council: www.mcnz.org.nz or send an enquiry to doctors@hsr.com.au
When the application is approved you will get an invitation for a registration interview in New Zealand. The Medical Council will send you a visa for the interview which is your proof of being registerable as a doctor at the same time, which is one of the requirements of the immigration department.
The fee for registration under the provisional general scope is currently NZ $425 and the fee for the Annual Practising Certificate, to be paid at the time of the interview in New Zealand, varies from NZ $270 - NZ $675.
