Location:

The Co. Wicklow Mental Health Services are based in the East Coast Area Health Board, which covers the Wicklow coast from Bray to Arklow and incorporates mid & east Wicklow. There are approximately 100,000 in the catchment population. The focus of the service is community based, in order to meet the Mental health needs of the urban and rural population areas.

Services Provided:

The service headquarters & inpatient services are based in Newcastle Hospital in Greystones.

    Acute In-Patient Services:

    These are provided in Glencree unit which is a 30 bedded integrated unit. The focus of nursing care is on individual and group psychotherapy delivered through a key worker & multi disciplinary team approach.

    Continuing Care Service:

    This is provided in Avonmore unit which is a 30 bedded integrated, continuing care admission and respite unit. Nursing care programmes include the use of group work in the form of music therapy and Sonas aPc. Patients and their families have access to a multi-sensory garden and the unit also has a multi-sensory room.

    Rehabilitation Services:

    This service is provided in Avondale unit, which is a 20 bedded integrated high support hostel. There is an individual rehabilitation programme drawn up for each patient in consultation with the multidisciplinary team.

    Day Care services:

    These are provided in;

    • The Killmullen Enterprise Centre located in Newcastle Hospital
    • The Lincara centre located in Bray
    • Sonas house located in Arklow
    • Carnew Community Care located in Carnew.

Future Developments:

The service is working off a seven year development plan which has prioritised the areas for development, mainly;

  • Psychiatric Intensive Care unit
  • Old Age Psychiatry Services
  • Rehabilitation Services
  • Day centre & residential developments in Arklow
  • Mid sector community development

In-Service Training:

The Co. Wicklow Mental Health Services is committed to both under graduate & post graduate training & education. Nursing management work in partnership with the staff in this area.

Staff Rosters:

Community based staff work a Monday to Friday roster. Hospital based staff work two days on followed by two days off. On alternate weekends they either work three days (Sat, Sun, Mon) or they are off these three days.
