Vergemount Mental Health Services stretches from South Liffey Quays to Irishtown, Sandymount on the east to Milltown, Dundrum on the South and Rathmines/Rathgar to Patrick's Street, Nicholas Street on the west, catering for a population of 93,000.

Components of the Service

The main components of the service is the prevention of mental illness, early identification and assessment, psychiatry of old age service and community services.


Services Provided
    The acute Admission Unit:

    This unit is situated on the grounds of Clonskeagh Hosptial, Vergemount. It has a bed capacity for 29 patients. A new purpose built unit is currently under construction in the grounds of St. Vincent's University Hospital, Elm Park. It is expected to be commissioned early 2003.

    Community Services:

    There are out-patient clinics in Baggot Street Hospital and Irishtown Health Centre.

    Glenmalure Day Hospital, Miltown:

    It provides a therapeutic environment for clients. Provisions are made for clients who require anxiety management, assertiveness training, family therapy and bio-feeback.

    Community Alcohol Service:

    This is based at Baggot Street Hospital. It provides treatment involving assessment, after care programmes, family services and individual counselling.

    Ringsend Day Centre:

    It provides a daily support programme for clients, Monday to Friday.

    Community Residential Facilities:

    This provided by a high support hostel, Swanlea. A medium support hostel, Rathgar Road and a low support hostel, Kerogue Road, Additional accommodation is currently being aquired to expand the programme.

    Psychiatry of old age :

    This service facilitates an assessment and respite service at St Vincent's University Hospital, Elm Park and Cois Ceim,Tivoli Road, Dun Loaghaire. Continuous care services are provided at Cois Ceim, Le Brun and Whitethorn House, Clonskeagh Hospital. The Day Hospital is situated in the grounds of St. Vincent's University Hospital, Elm Park.

Staff Development

Staff are encouraged through staff development programmes to avail of post graduate training in Dublin City University, Royal College of Surgeons and other educational institutions of continuous education. Staff educational training programmes are held throughout the year to up-date skills, refresh and to keep staff informed of the latest developments in nursing. Opportunities for promotion will arise for those interested in advancing their nursing careers.

Rosters:

Staff are rostered to work on alternate days from 8a.m. to 8:40p.m in the hospital area Night duty in there services is from 8:30p.m. to 8a.m. for one week with the following week off. Most staff are rostered to night duty approximately 3 months a year. Community based nursing staff generally work from 9a.m. to 5p.m.
