Mike Spiro's Experience Down Under
•Where are you originally from?
Boston, Massachusetts, USA
• Where are you working now?
Prince of Wales Accident and Emergency in Randwick, Sydney
NSW
• Why did you choose to move to Sydney?
It’s a city I’ve always wanted to see and this was a good
way to see it and live here while I worked and travelled at the same
time.
• How different is it from back home?
It’s different in that there’s much more green space and
the harbour is much more beautiful than at home. It’s also a harbour
that is much more accessible and active and the view of the city from
the water is incredible.
• What's the best piece of advice you could offer to others?
If you really want to travel and work here then just do
it (to use the Nike motto). Stop making excuses and start doing what
needs to be done to get over here. It’s just keeping on top of the
deadlines and paperwork that’s the hardest thing to do. Stay motivated
because it will pay off when you’re having a barbeque on the beach
in December and your friends are trying to keep warm in a snowstorm
back home. The best part is you get to call them and tell them all
about the great weather you’re having and how it’s just getting so
boring putting on a t-shirt everyday because it’s so warm (wait till
you get here, it’s a great phone call to make).
• What did you think of HealthStaff Recruitment's Meet
and Greet Service / Airport Pick Up?
Meet and greet was great, though I was a wee bit too tired
to really enjoy Miriam’s company. Though, she didn’t laugh at me when
I tried to get into the driver’s side seat (that’s the passengers
side at home), so that was nice.
• What was your first impression of the city and hospital?
I was really impressed with the city and the parks, the
harbour and the museums. Everyone was so nice and incredibly helpful
when it came to setting up my utilities and renting an apartment,
and just general life stuff. I thought the hospital was going to be
more modern in its equipment and its nursing practice, both of which
are a wee bit antiquated.Though the staff are a great group to work
with.
• What was the best thing HealthStaff Recruitment did for
you?
HealthStaff Recruitment's (Sue Andersen and Jonelle Mais)
were both excellent, always ready to answer all of my insane questions
on every topic right down to giving me Aussie slang lessons before
I came over. Really nice and approachable and accessible are all descriptors
of my experience with HealthStaff Recruitment. Thanks everyone.
• How do you find the position? What do you most like about
the hospital?
I found the position through HealthStaff Recruitment's
website. My favourite thing about the hospital is the core "If you
really want to travel and work here, then just do it..."staff of the
emergency dept. They have been great. Very funny, really easy to get
along with and have made my experience well worth the trip.
• What is your favourite thing about the location?
I’m in walking distance to the beach and a quick bus ride
to the city, not a bad location at all.
• Is there advice or feedback that you have for Healthstaff
regarding our services?
My best piece of advice for HealthStaff Recruitment, other
than keep up the great services and keep hiring great recruiters like
you already have, is that you should provide a detailed description
of the hospitals and the specific areas in the hospitals where you
place people to work. The nurses should have a fair idea of what the
patients' population is like and what types of conditions they’ll
be taking care of when they get here.

WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK....
Hi! My name is Liz...
The most common question I get asked, apart from those which are job
related is, hows the weather over there? Beautiful
is my reply ...(even if it is winter and blowing a gale outside). I
actually had a father of one of my UK candidates say to me yesterday,
that the sun had been shining in his backyard for 5 minutes and he had
sun stroke!
Working between the hours of 8am - 2pm (UK time), has its challenges.
Amongst them, I have learnt to become a weather girl and an economist
(I now take notice of the stock exchange, A$1 was buying 42p today!)
I have mastered the ability to decipher many accents in so little time,
but I am happy to say that I am managing to keep my Aussie accent and
sense of humour.
So please, give me a bell. Ill say Gday, well chew
the fat and have a chin wag. I promise to get as busy as a centipede
on a hot plate and it wont be too long before weve found
you a job so you wont have to blow all your dough when you get
to this great southern land. Bring your ankle bitters and your missus
or hubbie if you have them and youll be as happy as a pig in mud,
fair dinkum!

Australian Permanent Residency Visas Available For Nurses!
HealthStaff Recruitment is excited to announce we can now offer overseas
nurses the opportunity of a permanent residency visa to Australia with
NSW Health.
NSW Health is able to sponsor overseas nurses who want to obtain a
permanent residency visa for Australia.
To qualify for a PR visa with NSW Health there are a few criteria to
be aware of:
1. Overseas nurses should have approximately three years post registration
experience.
2. You should be available to work with NSW Health for at least two
years.
3. Applicants should be under the age of 45 years (an immigration policy).
In some instances with nurses over the age of 45 or who have less than
three yrs experience PR visas can still be issued under an ‘exceptional
appointment’ category.
The cost of the PR visa is $1935. This cost covers the applicant and
their spouse and children. There will also be some additional costs
for medicals.
Some of the benefits of the PR visa are it allows you and your family
to stay permanently in Australia. It also means you avoid expensive
school fees in NSW for your children and it allows you to access the
Australian Medicare system. Employer sponsored PR visa’s can be issued
in just a few months.

Spring Racing Carnival
Horseracing takes place in Melbourne throughout the year. The Spring
Racing Carnival is the feature event of Melbourne when the culture of
racing is at its most colourful and frenetic.
The Melbourne Cup is one of the world’s most famous horse races and
the main event of the Melbourne Spring Racing carnival, which runs through
October and finishes with the Melbourne Cup on 1st November 2005. The
cup brings the whole of Australia to a stand still for three minutes
or so, during which the race is run. Serious punters and fashion conscious
race goers pack the grandstand and lawns of the Victoria Racing Club’s
beautiful Flemington racecourse. It’s definitely a day of fun and adventure
and a must see.
