| MEET
THE IRISH AUSSIES & KIWIS |
As promised we have included excerpts
from the Aussies and Kiwis who
are currently living in Ireland!
Here are some comments about our Meet
& Greet Buddies Dick Bennett
and Ray Keane:
"Great support over here. Ray Keane
who met me at the airport has been fantastic to Tyson and I. Hes
helped me heaps with banking, PPS etc. and we keep in contact so
when new Aussies come over I go to meet them with him. "
Dayna, Residential Care Worker, ECAHB
"On arrival I was met by Ray Keane,
who then took me out to a B&B where I stayed for a
few days..."
Tyson, Residential Care Worker, ECAHB
"Another thing that I want to mention
is that Dick Bennett continues to be in touch with me as often as
he can. I find that this follow up is really useful, particularly
when questions come to mind."
Carol, Social Worker, ECAHB
And some general comments on living and working in Ireland:
"The job and the people are very
welcoming and my only problem is how to slow down after such a hectic
pace for so long at Child Protection.
Above: Wexford in Southern Ireland
Dublin is a very alive city, rich in history
at every street corner. On weekends we become tourists and are also
developing ways to support one another. We meet at the pub by Friday
night with other Australian social workers and share our experiences
of how to cross the next bureaucratic hurdle. We are also starting
to look at travelling a little wider so we get to see that lovely
green Ireland from the picture books.
Overall I am loving the challenge and the
rewards of the experience of being here."
Dorothea, Social Worker, ECAHB
"I love Dublin and feel I am in a good
workplace - it is Day 2! But so far I have met very friendly people
and have received invites to social events through Australians who
are working here already. I feel there are lots of opportunities.
I only hope the time does not go too quickly. So for your part I
thank you very much for getting me here! I have appreciated your
encouragement in this process and that you always listened to what
I needed and followed through so quickly."
Kathy, Social Worker, ECAHB
"I am...thoroughly enjoying Dublin
and am very happy with the accommodation and am so pleased to be
working in the City of Dublin and in particular with unaccompanied
minors seeking Asylum. This is something quite new. The Irish are
very friendly and helpful and my Landlady is so sweet that she has
agreed to put my Niece up on the lounge for 5 nights over Easter
when she visits.

Above: A typical Dublin street scene, a mix
of modern and old
I have walked miles around Dublin,
and am getting to know it. Ive joined the local Library for
Internet use, have been invited on to a judging panel for the Irish
National finalists for public speaking in a couple of weeks and
have been invited to a Garden Party by Her Majesty, yes, The Queen,
at the Palace in Edinburgh on 2nd July. I also registered at the
Australian Embassy and have been invited for drinks on the 1st Friday
of each month, which they hold for Australians in Ireland. As you
can see I am not one to let the grass grow under my feet...(I would
advise others that) you really need to make a mind shift, have a
sense of humour and be flexible."
Bev, Social Worker, ECAHB
In September I was fortunate enough to catch
up with a large contingent of Australia and New Zealand Social Workers
living and working in Dublin. The Ashling Hotel, close to the centre
of Dublin, was the chosen venue. Our many thanks to Ray and Dick,
our dedicated Meet and Greet Coordinators in Dublin, who organised
such a successful evening, including the essential drinks and food.
Dick and Ray have made it possible for all our Australian and New
Zealand candidates to settle in and feel so welcome. This helps
to make it a home away from home! One of the many benefits of working
in Dublin is the travel. Can you believe for $100 you fly from Dublin
to Barcelona, Nice, Amsterdam or Paris? Some of the Social Workers
have even been to Iceland! And what about the driving experience
around Ireland? The weather was gorgeous and I was invited to spend
some time in Wexford, in the south. This part of Ireland is so picturesque
and because of the Gulf Stream the climate is very mild.....
there are even some palm trees.

HealthStaff
Recruitment took great pleasure in presenting the Australian Nursing
Awards (ANA) on Thursday 12 September 2002. For the first time,
there is official recognition of nurses' outstanding achievements
and commitment to their profession. The ANA have played a role
in supporting nurses, who do so much in supporting us.
HealthStaff Recruitment has worked closely
with nurses for a number of years, and it was our vision to give
something back. I believe these Awards have gone some way in doing
so. Our congratulations go to Ian and Sandra our finalists, and
especially Margaret, our Australian Nursing Awards winner for
2002. We are thrilled to have been able to assist them with their
studies, and also celebrate and acknowledge their achievements
in nursing. We all look forward to presenting the Awards
again next year.

Have you thought about working
in Wales?
It
is on the doorstep to Europe and only 2 hours from central London
by train. The cost of living is significantly cheaper than London
and has gorgeous scenery. South East Wales has magnificent views
and a rich history. It is an ideal destination for people who
enjoy outdoor activities such as cycling, walking, gliding, canoeing,
and fishing. Its not without its fashion and fun; restaurants
and pubs abound, plenty of good shopping and youll love
the sound of the welsh accent!
We have some new and exciting opportunities
for Radiographers, Radiologists, Speech and Language Therapists,
Physiotherapists, Registered Nurses, and Pharmacists in a large
NHS Trust in Wales. Talk to your local HealthStaff Consultant
for more details today.

Letter from London
Well, Christmas is approaching fast. Its
such
a different experience to be having a cold Christmas when I am used
to oysters and prawns and big bowls of salad on Christmas day!
When I was a kid, we always went to Anglesea beach for Christmas,
near The Great Ocean Road, so thats what Im thinking
about at the moment while the winter starts to draw in on London!
Id love to be able to pop down to Anglesea and go and say
Hi to the kangaroos at the golf course. These are kangaroos which
live "in the wild" on the golf course which is close to
bushland. In the evenings the greens can be covered with hundreds
of kangaroos coming in to munch of the freshly manicured lawns in
the sunset. I always used to take my international visitors to see
the kangaroos. I never grew tired of watching them. The kangaroos
AND the visitors!
The Great Ocean Road is a wonderful place,
and if youre living in Melbourne you really must make sure
that you head down for a visit. The beaches and scenery are spectacular,
but the crowds
start arriving at Christmas and right through January, so head down
there beforehand if you have
a chance.
Melbourne Cup Carnival! I cant believe
Im missing it. I absolutely LOVE "Cup week" and
you dont even have to go to the races to enjoy the festivities.
I just love the atmosphere of the Cup sweep at work. Put in your
$1 and get your money back if your horse comes last! Only in Australia!
Once I was even working in a mine in Western Australia, and we stopped
work to listen to Melbournes race. I couldnt believe
it! If you do get the chance to attend the races during the Spring
Carnival, I highly recommend it. Great fashions, fantastic hats,
handsome boys, champagne picnics.......oh and horse racing too.
Please go, and put $1.00 each way on horse 4, race 6!!! Let me know
if I win!

I
joined the HealthStaff Recruitment team as a Recruitment Consultant
back in August of this year. Prior to this I was employed as a
Nurse Manager at a large public teaching hospital in Brisbane.
I have been nursing for over 13 years in a variety of settings
but medicine has been my forte. Since joining the company I have
been involved in recruitment drives in Singapore on two occasions
and am fast becoming a seasoned traveller. I have now to master
the art of travelling lightly. It has already been a wonderful
experience and a pleasure working with the staff, clients and
candidates alike.
Sue, Recruitment Consultant,
Brisbane office of HealthStaff Recruitment.
"Welcome to Australia"
are the first words youll hear from Sue Stanley the new
Meet and Greet
Co-ordinator in Melbourne. Sue joined HealthStaff Recruitment
at the beginning of September and has been welcoming new arrivals
since.
Sue collects nurses from the Melbourne airport and takes them
to their temporary accommodation and helps them settle in. Sue
is available to provide support with the critical initial task
of how to locate/acquire permanent accommodation, tax file number
applications, opening bank accounts etc. HealthStaff Recruitment
also have Meet & Greet Co-ordinators in Perth, Sydney and
Brisbane.

SPOTLIGHT ON AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND
|
The Secret Life of Adelaide
Nestled
between rolling hills and unspoiled beaches Adelaide is a
pleasant, idyllic, cultured city. It is a small, easy city
with a mild, almost Mediterranean climate.
The city centre, the hub of business, politics, shopping and
entertainment, is surrounded by beautiful green parklands.
Adelaide has a rich heritage which you
will see in the grand, colonial architecture, majestic churches
and gracious gardens. Magnificent public buildings house fine
art collections, Aboriginal art and historical exhibits. North
Terrace is like a cultural boulevard, you will stroll past the
Art Gallery and Museum of Adelaide, and The University of Adelaide.
There is another passion in Adelaide, food and wine. Visit the
loud, lively Central Market for the freshest of colours, tastes
and aromas. And heighten the senses even more with a stroll through
Chinatown. Hundreds of restaurants, cafes, bistros and pubs proudly
serve some of the worlds
best wines from the nearby Barossa and Clare Valleys. Alfresco
dining on the lively Rundle Street in the heart of the city, and
cosmopolitan streets of North Adelaide is part of Adelaide culture.
If you
enjoy a celebration, a day trip to the famous wine regions during
the annual gourmet food and wine festivals is a must.
To experience another Adelaide tradition,
visit one of the Pie Carts that open in the city after dark.
A "pie floater" is a unique taste experience, a meat
pie with lashings of tomato sauce in a bowl of green pea soup.
The nightlife in Adelaide is cheerful and busy. Pubs, bars, discos
and the casino keep the city alive 24 hours.
Adelaide has something to offer everyone.
Why not visit Adelaide and experience "the good life".
We have vacancies at Hospitals throughout Adelaide, so contact
us now!

West Auckland Wine Trails
Do you like Wine? Well West Auckland
has boasted for years to have some
of the best wine down under!!
Henderson
has one of the largest clusters of wineries in the country. And
scattered across the softly undulating countryside that craddles
the townships of Kumeu, Huapai and Waimaukau are numerous quality-orientated
wineries.
West Auckland is one of New Zealands major
grape growing regions. Its northern climate is admirably suited
to the production of premium reds: Cabernet Sauvignon is the most
commonly plated grape,
with Merlot and Pinot Noir also important. Chardonnay and Sauvignon
Blanc are the predominant
white varieties.
