Why did you choose to move
to Sydney?
One of my good friends I trained with in New Zealand
moved here to do her graduate year at Sutherland Hospital.
In November 2004 I came over here for a holiday to see
her. Whilst here I fell in love with the place and decided
to come back as soon as I could.
What was the biggest challenge you faced during the
preparation stages of organising the move?
I never found anything a big challenge... maybe just
the fact that I left myself such little time to organise
everything. Although thanks to Maree everything was
organised and fell into place within six weeks.
What was the easiest part of the process?
I felt getting the job was. Maree asked where I wanted
to work (which hospital and department) and before I
knew it an interview at my chosen placement was arranged.
What is the best piece of advice
you could offer to others?
Moving is not as scary as it seems. HealthStaff Recruitment
made it heaps easier for me, I always felt there was
lots of support from staff there and if I ever needed
to know anything someone was always just a phone call
away.
|
What was the thing that surprised you most about Sydney?
How big it is. When here on holiday I didn't venture
far from Cronulla. New Zealand is so small in comparison.
What was the biggest hurdle
you crossed when you arrived to Sydney?
Probably finding a unit that is furnished. We had accommodation
organised for 1st 7 weeks, then hoped to find an apartment
close to work that is furnished as me and my partner
only came over with the clothes in our packs. Furnished
apartments are very hard to come across.
What was the best thing that
happened to you when you arrived to Sydney?
Probably getting picked up from airport. Just made us
feel so welcomed, and wasn't as scary as having to try
and find way on trains with all our gear.
What was your first impression of the city and hospital?
HUGE!!!!
How did HSR assist you?
With everything! Organised all paperwork for job. After
starting they rang every few days to see how I was getting
on....so much support, it's great!
|
What was the best thing HSR did for you?
Help bring me to Australia...
Best decision I've made.
How did you find the hospital
orientation?
Good, covered most things, was quite long though.
How do you find the position?
Excellent experience, great place and people to
work with.
What do you most like about the hospital?
Everyone works together as a team.
Would you recommend Sydney hospitals to others? Why?
Yes great place and great people... also the money heaps
better then home. Nurses are obviously more valued here.
Why have you stuck with HSR?
Because the people are so helpful and I feel they did
an excellent job getting me here in such a short time
frame.

| Homesickness
- Its Completely Normal! |
|
Things are cruising along nicely
you've settled
into your new job, found a place to live, making friends
and
then suddenly bang
you hit the ground with a thud!
Homesickness can affect anyone, any time - even if
you are feeling well adjusted and happy. Several things
can bring on those feelings of anxiety or worry - a
problem at work, bad weather, a birthday, wedding or
special event at home that you are missing out on or
even just missing your bus! You can go from happy and
carefree to tearful and miserable in the blink of an
eye.
The important thing to remember about feeling a bit
emotional or home sick is that it is completely normal,
and to be expected from time to time.
|
Most people who live in a foreign country or city will
experience it at some time. It might help to have a
good cry and feel wretched for a few hours!
You can also do something positive for yourself to
make yourself feel better- treat yourself to a coffee
and some people watching in a groovy café, book
yourself a trip or journey to somewhere interesting
in the city you are living in, go for a walk, see a
movie, have a warm bubble bath or call home.
Your friends and family will always love to hear from
you, and its not as expensive as you think. Surprise
them, by just ringing for a gossip.
|
If you decide to just wallow in your homesickness and
sit at home under the covers with a tub of ice cream-
go for it and feel rotten for a few hours, but don't
stay sad for too long.
Talk to someone. Don't let your homesickness take over
or get you down. Living in another country can batter
your emotions. It's important to acknowledge there will
be 'highs' and 'lows'. Accept that feeling low from
time to time is normal and you'll soon be back on track
and enjoying your adventure.
Always remember, you can talk to your HealthStaff consultant
any time.
