The Australian Nursing Awards presented by HealthStaff Recruitment officially recognise the crucial contribution of nursing professionals in the community. These Awards are the first time Nurses were acknowledged in a national capacity.

The Awards aim to encourage skills advancement and excellence in the Nursing profession by awarding outstanding nurses from each of the following three categories:

Nominations must be made by a senior staff member supporting their nominees application to further studies in their chosen field. Scholarship funds up to $5000 will be awarded to the successful candidate with two finalists receiving up to $2500 each.

Aventis Undergraduate Nursing Awards
Three Awards will be presented to recognise excellence in final year undergraduate students in Nursing, nominated by their university. The price money is $500 for all winners.

National Care Awards

The National Care Awards seek to recognise and reward excellence in Nursing practice. American Nurse Amy Coulson
An Interview with Amy Coulson, American Nurse working in Sydney

Perth Drinks

HSR: Where are you originally from?
Galveston Island, Texas

HSR: Where are you working now?
The Children's Hospital at Westmead

HSR: Why did you choose to move to Sydney?
It's a big city but I am able to get to the beaches and mountains easily, and great public transportation

HSR: What was the biggest challenge you faced during the preparation stages of organising the move?
Becoming registered as a nurse. It took ages.

HSR: What was the easiest part of the process?
Getting a nomination number for my Work Visa. The hospital does it for you!

HSR: What is the best piece of advice you could offer to others?
Start your paperwork the day you graduate from nursing school. Only joking! You just need to be really organised and start your Nursing Registration application as early as you can.

HSR: Would you recommend other nurses from the USA come and work in Australia?
Without a doubt. It's a GREAT place to work.

HSR: What was the best piece of advice that you were given before you moved?
Apply for your Work Visa online. Also, about the day tripper pass. It allows you to go all over and not pay for each leg of the journey. You can take ferries, trains, buses etc for one flat rate

HSR: What was the best tool that you used during the preparation stages?
Internet

HSR: How did Healthstaff assist you? What was the best thing Healthstaff did for you?
They communicated with the hospital, about everything from accommodations to start dates.

HSR: What did you think of Healthstaff's Meet and Greet Service / Airport Pick Up ?
Miriam was absolutely great. She is tops. She even brought me a sleeping bag because she knew I had no linen.

HSR: What was the biggest hurdle you crossed when you arrived to Sydney?
The day I got here the trains were out. No one knew how to get anywhere. I thought it was always like that!

HSR: What was your first impression of the city and hospital?
There is not much to Westmead itself, but Sydney is great fun with lots of international flare.
I LOVE the hospital. It's a registered art gallery!

HSR: How do you find the position?
I LOVE it!

HSR: What do you most like about the hospital?
It is so kid focused. We have Dr Clowns, therapy dogs, pools, large gardens, massive play rooms, our own radio station. I really could go on and on.

HSR: What is your favourite thing about the location?
It's located half way between the beach and the mountains. Only about 45 mins via train to downtown Sydney.

HSR: Where are you planning to travel to or visit next?
Cairns.

HSR: Why have you stuck with Healthstaff?
Because my recruiter rocks! She makes sure things run smoothly. She contacts me regularly to make sure everything is going well.

HSR: Is their advice or feedback that you have for Healthstaff regarding our services?
Keep up the good work!

HSR: Have you attended any of our social events? What social events would you like to see HSR organising?
Yes, I had a great time at the Social Evening.Next time I would like to do something active... maybe go for a sail, to the beach, scuba, parasailing??

Thank you to all our nurses and clients who came to the Perth Social evening. It was a lovely evening and very nice to meet our nurses and clients in Perth. We will be over again soon - keep an eye out for another invite in the new year! I hope you like the photos! Joey.

New Zealand Update
New Midwifery Council of New Zealand

In September the Midwifery Council of New Zealand became operational as a registration board in its own right. This means that all practising midwives in New Zealand must now be registered with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand and have their name entered on the Register of Midwives.

The application process is straight forward and details can be found on the Midwifery Council of New Zealand website www.midwiferycouncil.org.nz

The Nursing Council of New Zealand will now only register nurses. Any Midwives who applied for registration through the Nursing Council of New Zealand before 18 September 2004, will continue with that process. Midwives applying for registration after 18 September 2004 will need to meet the Midwifery Council criteria for registration and apply through the Midwifery Council processes.
