The Alfred History
The Alfred was founded in 1871, and stands as the oldest hospital in Victoria operating within its own campus. The hospital was built on honour of his royal highness, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, who survived an assassination attempt in 1868 while visiting Australia! The people of Melbourne were so thankful for the safety of Prince Alfred, that they established a find to build a hospital in his name.
