New Zealand is a beautiful country, promising gorgeous green landscapes, mountainous national parks, hot springs, night life, outdoor adventure, and flora and fauna; there’s literally something for everyone. It’s a perfect place for a holiday and so, so much more if you live there.

If you’ve decided to move to New Zealand and work as a GP, then perhaps you’re interested in what the average doctor’s salary is and the range you should be expecting – Also, what are the conditions for doctors working in New Zealand? We have taken the time to answer all of these questions below, and more.

New Zealand has plenty going for it. It has a clean environment and a vast coastline over two islands, offering a great lifestyle of work-play balance for any medical professional. No matter whether you’re single or have a family, there is so much to do; you’ll be richly busy both at work and in your private life.

Plus your work week won’t take up too much of your time – in fact, 38 hour weeks are standard and anything over that is overtime, which is paid handsomely. As you need to keep meticulous timesheets detailing what hours you’ve worked, anything over that 38 hours is immediately flagged and paid at time and a half, double, or more.

Opportunities in New Zealand for GPs to earn a great salary abound, too. There are many training prospects, and junior doctors are treated with respect and given a chance to prove themselves with the more senior staff. All medical staff are regarded with respect, though, and this is reflected in their training programmes, which educate their students to an exceptional standard. It’s no small wonder that doctors flock to New Zealand to earn a competitive salary.

While the private health system in New Zealand isn’t as expansive as that in Australia, openings do exist depending on the specialty you find yourself in. Also, if you choose to work as a consultant in New Zealand, you’re not restricted from working at other facilities by your hospital.

The average doctor salary in New Zealand varies with the seniority, for example a resident can expect to earn up to $100,000 a year (in a public hospital, approximate salary package). A registrar, though, could earn at least $145,000 a year. If you’re a general practitioner, that rises to $180,000 and a consultant (specialist), $300,000. On top of these generous GP salaries, you can expect up to 10 sick days per year and between four and five weeks’ holidays a year.
