August-September '03 Newsletter
On 1 September, Olga will be on a plane to Brisbane to commence
working at St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital. Joey Cooney speaks
with Olga from Ireland.
|
|
|
"HealthStaff
recruitment have been like a friend to me. They are
reliable and friendly. They have always been there for
me and are never too busy to take your call. The reassurance
and encouragement was wonderful and they had no problems
getting me a job, in the speciality and locality I wanted
to be in, which was potentially difficult as I was not
an easy candidate."
|
I wanted to know why Olga wanted to work in Australia. For Olga
and her husband it was the lifestyle and the challenge. When
her husband came home after he had visited Australia for work,
he was so enthusiastic about Australia and told her how wonderful
it was. Olga:
"So my husband and I made the decision
to move together with our three children".
When I asked Olga why she had chosen HealthStaff Recruitment
(HSR), Olga said that she chose HSR after searching on the Internet
and after applying to a number of agencies;
"HSR was the only one who replied, paid me attention and
were of course very helpful".
Olga continued by saying:
"They were always on the other end
of the phone, there were never any problems and HSR were always
efficient in providing information and keeping in touch throughout
the process. They were always very helpful and knowledgeable.
There was always a friendly voice to talk to and I really didn't
have to do much, HSR took care of everything."
Is there anything you would advise others about?,
I asked.
"Yes be patient if you are being
sponsored. The time line for the sponsorship nomination and
the visa application takes 4-6 weeks. Be prepared to wait longer
than this for both applications as it can take much longer than
this. It is no fault of anyone's just be prepared!"
When I asked my last question what she was most excited about,
Olga replied:
"Everything! Starting a new job is
very exciting, I just can't wait to get there and start. We
are also looking forward to the challenge, the lifestyle and
the sunshine. We are all excited about different things".
Thank you Olga.
We will follow Olga and her family for a while to see what their
experiences are in Australia and we will catch up with her again
when she will arrive
in Brisbane.
If you would like to let us know your experience with us and
have any tips for others, please drop us an email.

| Things
To Do In Perth |
Greetings from Perth - The Best in the
West
Perth City
The
inner city of Perth bustles with activity and
offers a wide range of shopping, theatre productions
and for the more adventurous there are water activities
on the Swan River such as Jet skiing and surf
catting as well as river cruises.
Perth Sunset Coast
Take your pick of beaches along the Sunset Coast
for long relaxing walks along pristine white sand,
surfing or perhaps lazing on a beach towel while
watching the world go by. Being on the West Coast
of Australia certainly has its advantages and
the perfect end to
a day at the beach would have to be the beautiful
evening sunsets.
Fremantle
The Port city of Fremantle lies just south and
is a popular spot, particularly at weekends when
you will find markets, entertainment and plenty
of alfresco style cafes and eateries to take full
advantage of the beautiful Perth climate. Fremantle
also offers a range of galleries where you can
buy works produced by local artists. Great night
life exists here too.
Rottnest Island
Just a short ferry trip away from Perth is Rottnest
Island making it suitable for a day trip, weekend
or
a longer stay. It is a quiet place seemingly caught
in time and offering a very relaxed atmosphere.
The Island is perfect for leisurely walks and
cycling,
as well as snorkelling and swimming. Also meet
the local Quokkas, a unique little marsupial responsible
for the Island's name.
Perth Night life
Perth has a number of locations, which jump into
life, especially at the weekends. Just outside
the Perth city centre is the Perth district of
Northbridge where you will find a range of nightclubs,
pubs, cafes and eateries, offering an eclectic
mix of cultures and cuisines.

Cheers from the West Coast
A great night (and lots of chips) was had by all when
we headed over to Perth for the drinks night in June

Meet
& Greet with a smile
As the new "Meet & Greet" person for
Melbourne Office, I'm looking forward to meeting
you when you arrive in Melbourne. Having been a
Melbournite all my life I have a great passion for
the city and look forward in being able to assist
you settle into your working life here. I am fortunate
to be able to spend some time in the city centre
with Melbourne City Council as a volunteer with
the Visitors Information Centre, so I am very up
to date with what is happening in Melbourne.
I live on the north-east side of Melbourne in the
suburb of Eltham which is known for its dense bushland
and also as the birth place of many of Australia's
great artists. There are walking tracks through
the bush with abundant native birds and animals
nearby my home and I am woken each morning by the
laughing call of kookaburras. If anyone would like
a bush walk through the area, I would be happy to
share the scenery with you some time. Just leave
your number at the office.
I hope to catch up with you all at the next drinks
night and share your news.
Cheers, Dale

Next drinks stop, Grevill Street Hotel
Joey, Jonelle and Dale from Healthstaff Recruitment
in Melbourne met up with a group of Nurses from around
the globe, at The Greville Street Hotel.
We caught up with Nurses from Singapore, South Africa
and the UK who
are currently working at different Hospitals throughout
Melbourne. We had an enjoyable evening out, with plenty
of laughs and it was a good opportunity for the Nurses
to compare stories and discuss their experiences of moving
to a new country.
We look forward to another Social Evening later in the
year, as well as meeting some more Nurses who will be
arriving in Melbourne in the coming months! If you are
new to Melbourne these get togethers are a great chance
to meet other Nurses who may also be new to the city,
or who may have been here a while and can give you some
tips! It is also a great opportunity to meet members of
the friendly Healthstaff team and for us to meet you!!
Keep an eye on our Newsletter for details of upcoming
events.

nominate
and celebrate
The Australian Nursing Awards, presented by HealthStaff
Recruitment, was launched for the first time last
year to officially recognise the crucial contribution
of nursing professionals in the community. This
was the first time Nurses were acknowledged in a
national capacity.
We are proud to announce in 2004 the Awards will
be presented in conjunction with Victoria University.
The Awards aim to encourage skills advancement and
excellence in the Nursing profession by awarding
outstanding nurses from each of the following three
categories:
Hesta Scholarship Awards
Scholarships will be awarded to three outstanding
Nurses to fund further education or training in
the specialty of their choice. Nominations must
be made by a senior staff member supporting their
nominees application to further studies in their
chosen field. Scholarship funds up to $5000 will
be awarded to the successful candidate with two
finalists receiving up to $2500 each.
National Care Awards
The National Care Awards seek to recognise and reward
excellence in Nursing practice. Nominations are
made by patients, the families and friends of patients
and colleagues of nominees who wish to acknowledge
the provision of care they considered to be excellent.
There will be one winner in every State and Territory
and the National winner will be announced at the
Award ceremony. The prize money is $500 for all
State or Territory winners and $1500 for the National
winner.
Undergraduate Nursing Awards
Three Awards will be presented to recognise excellence
in final year undergraduate students in Nursing,
nominated by their university. The prize money is
$500 for all winners.
Nominations
The official launch will take place in January 2004
and the closing date for nominations will be
Friday 26 March 2004.

instigated an awards program in Victoria, on the
community's behalf, to acknowledge excellent care
and attention given by nurses to the Victorian public.
The first year of the awards attracted 70 nominations,
from which 5 nurses were selected to receive a Nurses
Care Award. By comparison, 342 nominations were
received in 1998 from patients, the family and friends
of patients and collegues of nominees who wished
to acknowledge the provision of care they considered
to be excellent.
